PRINCE RUPERT, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA
The 59-acre Prince Rupert Container Terminal is a dedicated intermodal (ship to rail) container terminal, with a design capacity to move in excess of 500,000 TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units) per year. It is uniquely designed to efficiently handle the largest concentration of intermodal rail business. The terminal commenced operations on October 31, 2007, creating the first new transpacific trade corridor in 100 years, and is currently serviced by two CKYH Alliance (COSCO, Hanjin, "K" Line, Yang Ming) services. Fairview Terminal's accumulative container throughput to the end of the third quarter 2008 totaled 102,775 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units). On a quarterly basis, container volumes increased 281% from the first three months (21,040 TEUs) to the third quarter (59,220 TEUs).
The jump in throughput is a result of the COSCO-CKYH Alliance's weekly CEN service that began calling on the port July 8 with 7,400 & 8,200 TEU vessels, as well as the continued increase of containers from the Alliance's initial PNW service. The Port of Prince Rupert is also developing an adjacent 1000-acre industrial park to further enhance velocity for shippers as well as expand bulk and liquid cargo capabilities. This includes a Canpotex potash terminal to be operational by 2012. The Prince Rupert Port Authority has also initiated a Fairview Terminal Phase 2 expansion to increase capacity to 2 million TEUs by 2014.
