Port of Oakland

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA

The Port of Oakland is a world-class international cargo transportation and distribution hub. Located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, one of the great natural harbors of the world, Oakland was among the first ports globally to specialize in intermodal container operations. The Port of Oakland loads and discharges more than 99 percent of the containerized goods moving through Northern California, the nation's fourth largest metropolitan area. A full 1/3 of all shipping to and from the Port of Oakland is sent between the United States and China.

In 2007 2,058 vessels arrived at the Port of Oakland, connecting the region with over 1000 ports around the world.  Oakland's 20 deepwater berths and 35 container cranes, 29 of which are Post-Panamax size, are backed by a network of local roads and interstate freeways, warehouses and intermodal railyards.  The nearly completed dredging of the Port is slated to provide deepened channel depths of 50' to handle the worlds largest container ships.
